The variety is of French origin and is historically associated with the Normandy region, specifically the Pays d'Auge area. Trees of this variety are traditionally grown in old orchards, often in the form of high-stem plants.

The apple tree is an exclusively industrial variety whose fruits possess the necessary content of tannins and sugars for high-quality fermentation. The variety has a marked natural resistance to diseases characteristic of fruit crops in the humid climate of Normandy.
