The Holsteiner Cox variety, also known as Holstein or Vahldiks Cox, is a vigorous tree with a spreading crown. The fruits of the variety have a sweet-and-sour taste and aroma, and are suitable for fresh consumption and culinary use. The tree is resistant to scab, but susceptible to powdery mildew and canker.

The name Mahler is a synonym for the old German variety Roter Stettiner, the history of which can be traced back to the end of the 16th century. Specialized databases contain mentions of Holstein Mahler as a mutant or clone of Holsteiner Cox, however, detailed characteristics of this form are missing.
