The name Klosterapfel was historically assigned to various local forms of apple trees grown in monastery gardens or their vicinity. It is not attached to a specific breeding variety and in literature can act as a synonym for other old varieties, such as Rheinischer Winterrambur.

In old pomological manuals, a description of Gelber Klosterapfel can be found, characterized by medium-sized fruits with an uneven, knobby shape and light lemon-yellow skin with a possible golden or reddish hue. Trees of this type are described as very fruitful.

The name Klosterapfel should be distinguished from the modern commercial variety Gloster, bred in 1951. These are different subjects, and in a historical context, Klosterapfel is viewed as a group of traditional local varieties without standardized characteristics.
