The Kovsztár variety is a hybrid developed within the framework of the Hungarian breeding program. Its parent forms are the Jonathan and Egri piros varieties. Genetically, it belongs to a group of related varieties, which also includes Jonager, Nyári zamatos, Kovauguszt, Kovelit and Kovmulti.

In agronomic sources, the variety is mentioned in lists of fruit crops possessing resistance to diseases. Detailed data on ripening periods, plant morphology and organoleptic characteristics of the fruit are absent in available publications.
