The variety originated in the mid-19th century in Luxembourg, presumably as a seedling of the Luxemburger Renette variety. At different times it was known under the names Schusterapfel and Wildling von Junglinster. The trees possess high wood frost resistance and late flowering, which allows for cultivation in conditions at risk of spring frosts.

The fruits are large, broad-conical in shape, and often have an uneven pentagonal configuration in cross-section. The variety is considered undemanding regarding soil and climatic conditions and is resistant to scab; however, in warm lowlands, it can be affected by powdery mildew. It is used in cooking, baking, and for cider production.
