M 1 is one of the first clonal rootstocks classified by the East Malling Research Station during the systematization of dwarfing rootstocks. In the industrial fruit-growing system, it served as the root system for grafting apple varieties.

In the history of breeding, this rootstock served as a parent form for the creation of more modern rootstocks, in particular MM-106. Currently, M 1 is rarely used in production, maintaining its significance primarily as an object of pomological history and material for genetic collections.
