The rootstock belongs to the semi-dwarf group; trees grafted on it reach 55–60% of the size of trees on seedling rootstocks. The root system is better developed than that of the M 9 rootstock, which improves anchorage, however, trees on M 26 still require permanent support.
The plant possesses high yield and precocity. Features of the rootstock include a tendency to form burr knots on the bark and sensitivity to fire blight and collar rot (Phytophthora). Fruit on this rootstock may require special attention during storage.
