The M 8 rootstock is part of the classic series developed by the East Malling Research Station. It is used as a root system for grafting and served as parent material for the breeding of new selection forms, in particular, the B.9 variety.

Trees on this rootstock are characterized by limited growth and shallow root system depth. Due to insufficient anchorage in the soil, they require mandatory installation of supports in the form of stakes or trellises and also need regular irrigation.

Varietal characteristics of fruits, such as taste and ripening periods, are determined by the scion, not the M 8 rootstock. Agronomic publications note that modern rootstocks surpass M 8 in indicators of root system winter hardiness and resistance to a number of diseases.
