The rootstock was obtained as a result of crossing the varieties Northern Spy and Merton 793. Trees grafted onto this rootstock reach 80–100% of the size of trees on vigorous rootstocks and are considered self-supporting, requiring no trellis installation at a mature age.

M111 possesses high resistance to woolly apple aphid, root rot, Phytophthora collar rot, and fire blight. The rootstock is characterized by good winter hardiness and the ability to grow on both heavy clay and poor sandy soils.

The onset of fruiting of trees grafted onto this rootstock occurs faster than when using seedling rootstocks, but slower than on dwarf rootstocks. M111 is widely used in commercial and private orchards for creating hardy and long-lived plantings.
