The rootstock provides grafted plants with a size representing approximately 75–85% of the height of trees on seedling rootstocks. It is characterized by moderate winter hardiness and moderate root sucker formation.

Plants on M 4 rootstock possess resistance to root rot and exhibit tolerance to fire blight. Due to a tendency to lean, trees on this rootstock often require staking.
