The rootstock was obtained by crossing Malling 2 and the Northern Spy variety. It belongs to the category of very vigorous rootstocks, ensuring the growth of grafted trees to 6 meters and more. Trees on this rootstock enter fruiting later than on dwarfing forms but are characterized by high yield.

The plant adapts well to moist and windy conditions, ensuring development on non-ideal soils, and shows resistance to Phytophthora collar rot. At the same time, the rootstock is susceptible to woolly apple aphid. Due to high vigor, M 25 is not used in modern intensive orchards and container cultivation; it is preferred for traditional and extensive orchards, as well as for replanting.
