In terms of its effect on the scion, the M 20 rootstock is similar to M.27. During its use, it was superseded by the M.27 rootstock due to an increased tendency to produce root suckers, although trees grafted on it are capable of producing large, high-quality fruit.

Like other rootstocks in the Malling series, it is a vegetatively propagated form. Attempts have been made to re-evaluate this rootstock in modern intensive orchard systems.
