Trees grafted onto this rootstock reach approximately 60–75% of the size of trees on vigorous seedling rootstocks and begin bearing in the 3rd–5th year. The rootstock has good anchorage, although support may be required in the first years to prevent tree leaning. A characteristic feature is the tendency to produce root suckers.

M 7 is characterized by relatively high drought tolerance and is capable of growing in heavy and wet soils. It possesses resistance to Phytophthora root rot and moderate resistance to fire blight, while being susceptible to woolly apple aphid. The winter hardiness of the root system is rated as medium, which requires soil mulching in conditions of severe winters without snow cover.
