The M 9 rootstock promotes the production of high-quality fruit with good caliber and coloration. The growth of a grafted tree using this rootstock is reduced to 40% of the growth vigor on a seedling rootstock. There are a number of clones of this rootstock that differ slightly in growth vigor and productivity in the stool bed.

The root system of the rootstock is superficial and brittle, characterized by weak anchorage, which is why trees require permanent support in the form of stakes or trellises. M 9 is sensitive to severe frosts, especially in snowless winters, and prefers fertile, well-drained soils. The rootstock is resistant to Phytophthora rot but is susceptible to fire blight and woolly apple aphid infestation.
