Under the general name Malápio lies a group of varieties, such as Malápio da Serra, Malápio Pequeno, and Malápio Cunha. These forms represent a part of Portugal's genetic heritage and are studied within the framework of state programs for biodiversity conservation.

The fruits of this apple group typically ripen by the end of October. Plant and fruit characteristics may vary significantly among individual varieties. Regarding resistance to diseases, for example, scab, different Malápio types demonstrate varying reactions: from no lesions to the presence of symptoms on leaves and fruits.

These varieties are used primarily in traditional gardening and genetic resource conservation programs, and are also suitable for sustainable organic production.
