The variety is a local Portuguese cultivar that historically developed in the Viseu region. In scientific research, Malápio da Ponte is studied as an object for genetic resource conservation and a potential source of disease resistance, such as to scab.

The fruits of the variety possess specific textural and biochemical characteristics: pulp firmness is from 19.5 to 23.4 N, protein content exceeds 1.2%, and ash content is about 85%. The variety is also being researched for its level of phenolic compounds and antioxidant potential.
