The variety is part of a group of clonally related or synonymous apple trees, which also includes Maçã São João, Maçã Gaspar, and Maçã Pato. The plant's genetic affiliation has been confirmed by studies using microsatellite markers.

The fruits of this variety are distinguished by the presence of prominent lenticels on the skin surface. The variety is of local importance for traditional gardening in the region and is included in the official agricultural registers of the Azores.
