The term MELA GENTILE does not refer to a specific variety with established genealogy, but is used to denote a number of local apple varieties in Italy, such as Trentino-Alto Adige, Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Marche, and Irpinia. In some sources, these forms are associated with the Mela Rosa or Rosa Gentile varieties.

There is no single morphological description, as the characteristics depend on the specific regional clone. Historically, such apples were valued for ripening in mid-summer, coinciding with the wheat harvest.
