The name Mela Dura translates from Italian as 'hard apple' and is used to describe the characteristics of fruits with firm flesh or a long shelf life. In a number of regional Italian atlases, this name is applied to ancient landrace forms of apple trees whose origin is limited to specific geographical areas.

In some international databases, the name Mela Dura Rossa is mentioned as a synonym for the ancient German variety Roter Eiserapfel. When describing local Italian forms, the fruits are characterized as small, weighing about 100 g, with a truncated-conical shape, and possessing good keeping quality; however, detailed scientific descriptions of their agrotechnical characteristics are absent.
