The variety has two forms: Panaia massima and the small-fruited Panaia di Norcia. The plant is characterized as hardy, resistant to major diseases, including scab. Different genotypes, including diploid and triploid forms, may be hidden under the name.
The fruits have a round, often flattened and asymmetrical shape. The skin is yellow-green with a red blush or reddish stripes. The flesh is tender, sweet and sour in taste, and is distinguished by a high ability to store until the spring period.
Harvesting usually takes place in October. The fruits are suitable for fresh consumption and culinary processing, possess high antioxidant activity, and a significant content of vitamin C and polyphenols.
