The variety is an old one, having originated as a chance seedling, presumably in the 15th century. In pomological literature, it is often mentioned as a synonym for the Roter Eiserapfel variety. The tree is characterized by strong, vigorous growth and forms a sturdy crown; the variety is noted for its hardiness and low requirements regarding soil and climate.
Fruits are medium to large in size with red skin. The flesh is yellowish or greenish-yellow, fine-textured and juicy, with a slight spiciness. The variety belongs to the utility group; the fruits are suitable for fresh consumption and processing. Fruiting begins relatively late, but subsequently, yields are regular and high. The fruits are distinguished by high keeping quality and can be stored until July.
