The variety is considered to be very ancient and originates from the La Rioja region; it is also mentioned in inventories of traditional apple varieties in various districts of Catalonia, in particular in the Val d'Alinya valley.

In the past, the variety had some commercial significance until the 1960s, but it did not gain widespread distribution. Today, it is preserved as an object of interest for maintaining biodiversity and studying adaptation to local ecosystems.

Detailed morphological information, including fruit characteristics or plant resistance to diseases, is practically absent in publications.
