The variety is historical and is mentioned in pomological reference books, in particular, in Olof Eneroth's work "Handbook of Swedish Pomology". It is found under the names Oranieäpple and Oranienapfel.

A distinctive morphological feature of the fruit is the "glassiness" or translucency of the flesh. This effect is caused by the filling of intercellular spaces with a fluid with a high sorbitol content, which also affects the taste qualities of the apples, making them sweet. The variety is traditionally used as a local garden variety for fresh consumption.
