The variety is of English origin and was selected by Richard Cox in 1830 from seedlings of the Ribston Pippin variety. In Slovenian agronomic literature, it is also known as Koksova oranževka, Koksova, or Cox's orange and is classified according to the Diel-Lucas system as a "golden rennet".

The variety matures in early September. The fruits are round-flattened in shape, small to medium in size, with a golden-yellow ground color and an orange-red overcolor. The flesh is yellowish, fine-grained, the fruits have a harmonious sweet-sour taste and aroma, but are prone to rotting during storage.
