The Paafenapfel variety is a local cultivar adapted to the conditions of the North Rhine-Westphalia region. Currently, work is underway on its pomological and genetic clarification, and the variety itself is included in projects for the conservation of genetic resources of fruit crops.

This variety is mentioned in lists of crops recommended for use in landscape planning and compensation measures for planting trees typical of the region. Regional biological stations act as curators and distribution centers for planting material.
