The Api Étoilé variety has been known since the 17th century. The tree has long and thin branches. The fruits are small, flattened, with five prominent ribs forming a five-pointed star. The skin is dense, waxy, light green in color with a pink blush.
The Reinette Rouge Étoilée variety was first described around 1830. The tree is medium-sized with an upright crown, characterized by vigor and resistance to apple canker, growing well in moist soils. The fruits are medium-sized, round, yellow-green with a dark red or purple blush and numerous stellate light lenticels.
The fruits of Reinette Rouge Étoilée have yellowish-white juicy flesh with a sweet-and-sour taste. It is a late autumn or winter variety, whose fruits store from November to February or May. The fruits of Api Étoilé are valued primarily as ornamental due to their dense skin and unusual shape.
