The variety is a mutation of the historic American Northern Spy variety. The tree has an upright growth habit with a spreading crown; the height depends on the rootstock and varies from 2.5 to 6 meters. The variety's hardiness zones correspond to 4–8 according to the USDA classification.

The fruit is large, aromatic, with firm, crisp flesh and a sweet-tart flavor with honey and spicy notes. The color is bright red, sometimes with stripes on a yellow background. The variety has good keeping quality, though the fruit has tender skin prone to damage.

The plant requires cross-pollination and may be susceptible to bitter pit and fire blight. The variety is most often found in private gardens and small farms, and it is also used as a parent form in the breeding of new varieties.
