The Rote Alkmene apple tree is a mutation of the German variety Alkmene, obtained by crossing the varieties Cox’s Orange Pippin and Geheimrat Dr. Oldenburg. Trees of this variety are characterized as medium-sized with vigorous growth in youth, which slows down with the onset of fruiting.

The medium-sized fruits weighing 110–140 g have a deep red skin color. The flesh is fine-grained, juicy, ranging from firm to creamy white. The taste is characterized as aromatic and honey-like with low acidity. The harvest matures from the end of August to the middle of September, and the fruits are not prone to shedding.

The variety is early-bearing and highly productive from the first years of life. It possesses improved disease resistance compared to the base variety Alkmene. It is intended primarily for fresh consumption and is also suitable for various types of culinary processing.
