Rote Alkmene is a mutation (sport) of the Alkmene variety, derived from the cross of Geheimrat Dr. Oldenburg and Cox Orange. The trees are characterized by compact growth with short internodes and a tendency for dense branching. Depending on the rootstock, the tree can reach 2–4 meters.

The fruits have a round-conical shape and a weight of about 100 g. The ground color of the skin is greenish-yellow, complemented by an intense red blush. The flesh is fine-grained, juicy, with aromatic characteristics typical of the Cox Orange variety. Harvesting takes place in September.

The variety shows relative resistance to scab and powdery mildew, but can be susceptible to fire blight. Trees are prone to overcropping, therefore they require regular pruning and fruit thinning to prevent fruit size reduction and tree exhaustion.
