The name Sommerkönig translates as "Summer King" and was used in historical literature as a synonym for several local apple varieties. Most often, the variety Gravensteiner, known since 1669 and originating from Southern Jutland, is mentioned under this name.

Gravensteiner is a summer variety, the fruits of which ripen from the end of August to the middle of September. The apples are valued for their taste qualities, however, they store poorly and are sensitive to mechanical damage. Besides fresh consumption, the variety is used for processing into juices and brandy.

The variety Gravensteiner is demanding regarding growing conditions; at present, its commercial significance has decreased. The name Sommerkönig was also historically applied to the variety Limonen-Renette and a number of other local apple tree forms.
