The variety has a long history, with mentions in documents from the 16th–17th centuries. The tree is characterized by vigorous growth and forms a dense and spreading crown. The variety is productive, however, it is demanding of soil composition, requiring fertile deep soils and warm growing conditions.

The fruits have white flesh, which may contain reddish streaks or have a light blood-red color. The flavor of the fruits is sweet and sour. The variety is considered sensitive to diseases and pests. The name "Sommer-Himbeerapfel" often acts as a synonym for the "Roter Herbstkalvill" variety, while in German pomology the term "Himbeerapfel" is a collective one and is applied to a number of other historical varieties.
