The fruits of this variety are distinguished by juicy sweet-and-sour flesh with a characteristic aroma, which is often described as balsamic or with hints of strawberry when fully ripe. Historically, the variety was considered elite and was intended for fresh consumption.

The variety is demanding regarding growing conditions. To obtain high-quality fruits in the past, labor-intensive cultivation methods were used, such as protecting each individual apple on the tree with paper bags to prevent skin damage.
