The variety was obtained from a seedling in the 1920s at the Ylä-Kauttu farm and was subsequently selected for propagation and study at horticultural institutes. The variety has been genetically identified and distinguished from other cultivars.

The tree is distinguished by its specific growth habit: young specimens have a tendency toward a spreading crown shape with wide branch angles, which may become weeping as the tree ages. The variety was used in breeding work as a parent form for the creation of the Talvikki variety.
