The plant is a deciduous shrub or small tree 3–6 meters tall with an open, spreading crown. Leaves are ovate, glossy, dark green, bronze when budding, and turn red-brown or orange in the autumn.
Flowers are up to 5 cm in diameter, purplish-crimson or pink-red, blooming in May. Fruits are small, spherical, bright red or red-orange, and remain on the branches for a long time. The variety is winter hardy but is characterized by high susceptibility to scab.
