Malus yunnanensis is a wild endemic species distributed in the mountainous regions of China and Myanmar. The plant is a deciduous tree 5 to 10 meters in height with a spreading crown and a straight trunk.
A distinctive feature of the species is its ovate or elliptical leaves with 3–5 lobes, which change color in autumn to yellow or orange-red. The flowers are up to 2 cm in diameter, white or pinkish in hue, gathered in inflorescences, and bloom in May. The fruits are small round apples 1–2 cm in diameter, ripening in September and having a red-yellow color with white dots.
The plant is used in landscape design as an ornamental crop and is also sometimes used as a rootstock. The species possesses medium drought tolerance and moderate winter hardiness, requiring protection for young specimens in cold climate conditions.
