The plant is a small fruit tree or a large shrub with strong growth. The fruits have a rounded shape, a brown color, and a characteristic crown of sepals at the apex; their size exceeds the parameters of the fruits of wild Mespilus species.
Fruit ripening occurs in October. At the time of harvest, they are hard and inedible; for consumption, they require ripening for 1–2 weeks in warm conditions, after which the pulp becomes soft and acquires the taste of spiced apple puree. The fruits contain a lot of pectin and are suitable for processing or fresh consumption.
The variety possesses winter hardiness, is suitable for cultivation on most soil types, and is characterized by high resistance to pests and diseases. It is an historical form, often used as a descriptive name for a group of large-fruited medlars.
