Djebel 169 belongs to the group of oriental tobacco varieties. In scientific literature, it most often appears as an object for experiments on plant genetic transformation aimed at increasing resistance to various pathogens.

The variety possesses natural resistance to blue mold (Peronospora tabacina) and black root rot (Phytophthora parasitica var. nicotianae). The variety has also been repeatedly used in laboratory studies to test resistance to brown leaf spot, wildfire, and potato virus Y.
