The DH 9 variety belongs to the flue-cured (Virginia) tobacco type. During the breeding process, the objective was to introduce downy mildew resistance genes into high-quality American lines, specifically NC 13. The original source of resistance was the GV 3 line.

The goal of developing the variety was to achieve an optimal balance of nicotine and sugar, compliant with industrial standards, while maintaining stable yield. The variety was considered as a component for improving hybrid properties; data on its morphological parameters and maturity dates in scientific publications are limited.
