The variety was obtained by interspecific hybridization using Nicotiana otophora and carries genetic material from Nicotiana alata. In breeding practice, this variety is classified as dark-cured tobacco and is valued for its resistance to serious diseases.

Polalta plants exhibit pronounced morphological defects, including dwarfism, thickened ribbon-like leaves, and abnormal venation. The TSWV resistance gene is tightly linked to the genes causing these deformations, which is why the variety is used primarily as a donor of traits in breeding programs.
