Faresana is a local variety (landrace) which is cultivated mainly in Basilicata and is included in the list of crops for the production of oil with the protected geographical indication Olio Lucano. In studies of genetic diversity, it is noted that the variety may have a heterogeneous profile, which is typical for ancient local varieties.
The variety is intended for the production of extra virgin olive oil. Biologically, it possesses complete self-incompatibility; therefore, it requires pollinator varieties for fruiting. Oils from local varieties of this region are characterized by average levels of fruitiness, bitterness, and pungency, with notes of fresh grass, artichoke, tomato, almond, or apple.
