The Merit variety is historically classified as a representative of the BVMG group, which includes the varieties Baron, Victa, Merit, and Gnome. It was developed in the mid-20th century and was widely used in breeding work and trials for the establishment of ornamental lawns, pastures, and sod production.

The plant possesses improved shade tolerance. Studies show that the variety demonstrates higher quality metrics under low nitrogen application rates compared to high rates.
