The variety is of ancient origin, presumably linked to Africa, and spread in Europe via Holland. In historical sources, it was also referred to as the pineapple or almond apricot due to its specific taste qualities and seed characteristics.

The fruits have orange flesh and are considered dessert-grade, suitable for fresh consumption and processing. The variety ripens in the mid-season, is characterized by low keeping quality of the fruits, requiring quick sale, and in modern agronomy is considered primarily as a historical genetic resource.
