Variety description

10 August 2026

The term Braune Knorpelkirsche designates sweet cherry varieties with very firm, crunchy flesh that resembles cartilage. This name is often used as a synonym for the old variety Große Schwarze Knorpelkirsche or other local varieties, such as Badeborner Schwarze Knorpelkirsche.

The Große Schwarze Knorpelkirsche variety, which serves as the prototype for the group, is characterized by vigorous trees 4–6 meters tall and a medium-late ripening period in July. The fruits are large, round, and have a dark red, almost black skin color.

The flesh of these cherries is juicy and sweet, distinguished by high firmness, which ensures good transportability. The variety is self-incompatible, requires cross-pollination, and is suitable for both fresh consumption and various types of industrial processing.

Given that different local forms may be hidden under the general name, it is recommended to clarify the specific varietal identity when using this name in catalogs.
