The Durone Nero group includes several varieties, often designated by numbers, such as Durone Nero I, II, and III. The trees are medium or vigorous, with spreading or upright crowns. The fruits are predominantly heart-shaped, medium or large in size, with firm, crunchy flesh and dark, almost black skin color at full maturity.
Varieties in this group are classified as mid-late and late in terms of ripening. They are susceptible to Monilinia, and resistance to fruit cracking from rain is rated as moderate or good. The fruits are versatile in use, suitable for both fresh consumption and processing.
Pollinator varieties are required to obtain a yield, as the group representatives are self-incompatible. Other local Italian cultivars or widely grown varieties such as Sunburst, Van, and Kordia are used as pollinators.
