The variety Farnstädter Schwarze, also known as Badeborner Schwarze Knorpelkirsche or Badeborner Dunkelbraune Knorpel, belongs to the group of heart-cherry (Knorpelkirsche) varieties. It originated as a chance seedling in the town of Badeborn in the second half of the 19th century and became widely distributed in Germany starting in 1912.

The fruits of this variety are medium to large in size, and their shape varies from conical-heart-shaped to oval-round. The firm skin is colored black-red. The flesh is firm, juicy, medium to dark red in color, and is distinguished by an intense sweet taste and aroma.

The variety is self-incompatible and has limitations regarding the choice of pollinator varieties, showing intersterility with certain types, such as Hedelfinger and Große Schwarze Knorpelkirsche. Currently, the variety is more often found in collections of rare types, although it was previously actively used in commercial fruit growing.
