Variety description

10 August 2026

In agronomic literature and pomological references, the name Goldkirsche most often acts as a synonym for the old sweet cherry variety Dönissens Gelbe Knorpelkirsche, also known by the names Bernsteinkirsche, Honigkirsche, and Wachskirsche. The variety was found in Germany around 1820 as a chance seedling.

The fruits of this variety belong to the yellow-fruited sweet cherry group and are small in size, characteristic of old varieties. Currently, this variety is more often found in collection orchards and programs for the preservation of genetic diversity, as the name Goldkirsche in modern trade more often refers to a tomato variety.
