The variety is traditional for the northwestern regions of Switzerland and belongs to ancient types of sweet cherry. It is characterized by a late ripening period, occurring from June to the end of July depending on the altitude of the terrain. Trees are capable of growing at an altitude of up to 900–1000 meters above sea level.

The fruits are large, colored black-brown with a matte luster. The flesh is juicy, of medium density, and has a sweet-and-sour taste with a distinct aroma. The fruits are resistant to cracking and easily separate from the pit. The variety is versatile in purpose: fresh consumption, canning, and the production of juices and schnapps.

The plants are undemanding regarding soil composition, including heavy and calcareous soils, but are sensitive to oxygen deficiency in the soil. The variety is known under many local names, the main one being Basler Adlerkirsche.
