The plant is a tree or large shrub up to 10–12 meters tall with a dense spherical crown and a characteristic aroma. The fruits are small, black, and edible, but are rarely consumed fresh due to their bitter and sour taste.

The seeds (kernels) of the plant are used as a spice called "mahlab," which possesses an aroma of almond, cherry, and rose. In horticultural practice, the species is valued for its high adaptability to calcareous and poor soils, being used as a basis for creating rootstocks.
