The Szomolyai fekete variety is an old Hungarian variety that was selected during breeding work in the mid-twentieth century. It is characterized as a self-sterile variety.

The fruits have dark red, almost black skin. The flesh of the fruits is colored, which makes this variety suitable for use in industrial processing.
