The sweet cherry variety Velvet was developed in Canada at the Horticultural Research Institute of Ontario. The origin of the variety in breeding materials is often indicated as unknown.

The variety belongs to pollination group IV and is suitable for cross-pollination of other sweet cherry varieties. In genetic studies, the variety is characterized by the set of self-incompatibility alleles S2S3.
